S&P index edges up, helped by telecoms

(Reuters) - The Standard & Poor's 500 stock index rose near its all-time closing high on Monday after a takeover deal for mobile phone company Alltel Corp. lifted the telecommunications sector.

The Dow fell slightly, weighed down by sagging shares of industrial companies.
