Platinum Futures Fall in Tokyo on Rising Yen, Concern That Demand May Slow

(Bloomberg) -- Platinum futures fell in Tokyo as a
rising Japanese currency reduced the appeal of buying yen-
denominated contracts for the dollar-priced metal, and as
a slump in world stocks raised concern that demand may drop.

The yen rose to 117.19 to the dollar, the highest since
March 29, on signs losses related to U.S. subprime mortgages are
starting to slow growth of the world's largest economy. Asian
stocks fell after the Standard & Poor's 500 Index had its biggest
three-week decline since 2003.

Yen Rises as Stocks Decline, Prompting Unwinding of Carry Trades

(Bloomberg) -- The yen rose to the highest in a
month against the euro and gained versus the dollar as declines
in European stocks and U.S. stock-index futures prompted
investors to unwind carry trades.

The Japanese currency rose to 164.83 per euro as of 7:08
a.m. in New York, from 165.34 late yesterday. It also rose to
120.16 against the dollar, from 120.50, approaching a 2 1/2-month
high of 119.81 reached July 25.

Asia shares dip on tech outlook, bonds firm

(Reuters) - Nervous share trading bolstered save-haven investments, nudging up gold and lifting Japanese government bond futures to another six-week high.

The dollar, dogged by persistent worries about the fall-out from the U.S. housing and mortgage woes, was unable to hold on to Monday's modest gains and dipped to a two-month low against the yen. The firmer Japanese currency began to eat into gains notched up earlier by exporters like Sony Corp. and Canon Inc. .

Dollar falls to record low vs euro

(Reuters) - The yen seesawed, sliding broadly in early Asian trading and hitting record lows against the euro in a move that traders attributed to speculative buying of sterling against the yen.

But the Japanese currency later rebounded to hit a six-week peak against the dollar of 120.80 yen on electronic trading platform EBS, the yen's highest level since early June.

Yen May Extend Gain Against Euro After Stock Decline Raises Risk Aversion

(Bloomberg) -- The yen may extend its advance against
the euro on speculation a sell-off in U.S. stocks will lead
investors to reduce risk.

The Japanese currency rallied against the euro and erased
losses versus the dollar as the worst three-day decline in U.S.
equities since February led investors to exit so-called carry
trades in which they buy higher-yielding assets financed by
loans in the yen. The stocks fell after benchmark Treasury yields
rose above 5 percent for the first time since August.

Yen Falls After North Korea Test-Fires Missiles Into the Sea of Japan

(Bloomberg) -- The yen fell against the dollar and
euro after North Korea test-fired missiles into the Sea of Japan,
prompting a threat of sanctions from Japanese Prime Minister
Shinzo Abe.

The Japanese currency declined against all 16 most-actively
traded currencies tracked by Bloomberg after Abe said his
country's patience ``isn't limitless'' and Japan retains the
option of further sanctions against its Asian neighbor. North
Korea's actions are a setback for the six-party talks aimed at
dismantling its nuclear program.
