U.S. House Approves Pelosi's $16 Billion Plan to Boost Renewable Energy

(Bloomberg) -- The U.S. House approved a $16 billion
tax plan and a renewable electricity mandate in broad energy
legislation that shifts the government's focus to wind, solar and
biomass production at the expense of traditional energy sources.

Passage of the so-called energy independence legislation is
a big victory for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as Congress departs
Washington for a monthlong break. It sets up a meeting with
Senate lawmakers as soon as next month to craft a bill to send to
President George W. Bush.

Black verdict closes chapter in fraud crackdown

(Reuters) - Speaking to reporters after the verdict was announced, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, the United States attorney here whose office brought the case against Black and three co-defendants, said the result sent a clear message to boardroom criminals that "if you take liberties and break the law with other people's money, there are going to be serious consequences."




The effort to stamp out corporate wrongdoing was born five years ago this week, when President George W. Bush signed an executive order establishing a multi-agency Corporate Fraud Task Force in the wake of multibillion-dollar scandals at Enron and WorldCom.

UPDATE 1-Iran sanctions bill passes first US Congress test

(Reuters) - WASHINGTON, June 26 - President George W. Bush
would be forced to sanction oil and gas companies doing
business with Iran under legislation that cleared a first
hurdle on Tuesday by winning overwhelming approval from a
congressional committee.




The bill was approved 37 to 1 by the U.S. House of
Representatives International Relations Committee.

UPDATE 1-U.S. immigration bill dealt blow in Senate

(Reuters) - WASHINGTON, June 7 - A sharply divided U.S.
Senate on Thursday threw into doubt the fate of the plan backed
by President George W. Bush to revamp U.S. immigration laws.




The Senate fell 27 votes short of the 60 needed to advance
the bill toward a final vote, dealing a serious blow to the
comprehensive effort to overhaul immigration law before Bush
leaves office in January 2009.

CORRECTED-UPDATE 1-Bush should be open to climate deal - Pelosi

(Reuters) - BERLIN, May 28 - U.S. House of Representatives
Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged President George W. Bush on Monday to
forge a compromise with other G8 countries on plans to fight
climate change at a summit in Germany next week.




The head of the opposition Democrats said she and a
bipartisan delegation of congressional leaders had visited
Greenland and seen how global warming was threatening the
livelihood of people who were not to blame.
