S.African stocks up in step with U.S and European markets

(Reuters) - South African shares led by banking firm Abil closed stronger on Thursday, buoyed by gains on U.S. and European stock markets.

"The South African market was better today because of stronger U.S. and European markets, and the local market was also coming off a very oversold position," a Johannesburg-based trader said.

Euro Slumps to Lowest in a Month Against Yen, Dollar After Stocks Drop

(Bloomberg) -- The euro dropped to its weakest in
almost a month against the yen and to the lowest in a week
against the dollar as European stock markets declined.

Global stocks have slumped and U.S. Treasury yields soared
to the highest in almost a year on expectations central banks
round the world will raise interest rates. The yen strengthened
against 15 of the 16 most actively traded currencies as the
decline in stocks prompted investors to sell higher-yielding
assets funded by borrowing at lower rates in Japan.

European shares track Asian losses, China worries

(Reuters) - European stock markets fell in early trade on Thursday with miners heading losers and tracking sharp losses in Asian markets as data from China showed strong economic growth and underlined interest rate worries.

By 0710 GMT, the pan-European FTSEurofirst 300 index was down 0.9 percent at 1,551.3, after snapping a three-day winning run on Wednesday.
